Anna Sui

Born in Dearborn Heights, Michigan in 1955, Sui studied at the Parsons School in New York. After graduating, she worked for a number of sportswear companies and acted as a stylist for photographer Seven Meisel.

In 1980, she designed under her own name. When Anna Sui started her own apparel company, her mission was to sell clothes to every rock ‘n’ roll store in the country. Sui has earned a reputation for bringing a designer’s sensibility to wild-child rock ‘n’ roll clothes with a vintage spin. In 1987, Sui design skills began to mature by the aid of Annette Breindel.

It was until 1991 when her label became well known. Sui utilizes a contemporary twist on vintage styles while blending them with cultural influences and flare. She now reigns as the queen of the fashion show extravaganza thanks to the music and theatrical influence of Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier’s theatrical runways. Sui’s collection is now sold in many major department and specialty stores, as well as her own stores. Her collection is priced moderately, which reflects Sui’s goal to make clothes that is accessible to all consumers.
