Christian Lacroix
Born in Arles, France in 1951, Lacroix studied Art History at the Mont Pellier University and Museum Studies at Sorbonre, Paris. From 1978 to 1981, he worked at Hermes as an assistant to Guy Paulin. He then became the head designer of Haute Couture in Patou. In 1987, he opened his own couture house in Paris.
Lacroix is known for using bold hues, with high waists, asymmetrical draping and baby-doll silhouettes. He stimulated interest in ready-to-wear from his couture. Many of his designs were widely copied and continue to be an inspiration to designers today. He is known for his elaborate textures and decor.
Christian Lacroix’s timing in opening his own couture house was perfect. No couture house had been established in Paris since 1961, when Yves Saint Laurent opened his house. Lacroix is fully aware of the impact and the influece that haute couture has in the fashion industry and designs with that in mind.
