Jean Paul Gaultier

Born in Paris, France in 1952, Gaultier would begin sketching ideas for collections by the age of fourteen. At the age of seventeen, he sent out his sketches to some major designers and was invited by Pierre Cardin to join his house for one year. He then worked for Jacques Esterel, Sean Patau, and for Cardin’s manufacturing operation in the Philippines.

Gaultier started his own label in 1927. Ever since, his ready-to-wear has been greatly influential. His designs have been quite humorous, extravagant, and clever. His designs consist of glamor blended with a tomboy zest. Gaultier has redefined the traditionally elegant trappings of Paris Fashion.

His designs tend to be surreal and rebellious, but always wearable. Gaultier always designs with historic references. He has always had interest in the new developments in artificial and unconventional fabrics such as his designs that implemented neoprene.
