
Oscar De La Renta
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1932, De La Renta studied at the university of Santo Domingo and the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid Spain. His first intentions was to become a painter. His first steps into fashion was when he designed a gown for the daughter of the U.S. ambassador in Spain, which was featured in the magazine cover of “Life”.
De La Rent joined Balenciaga’s Couture House in Madrid. He went to assist Antonio Del Castillo at the house of Lanvin-Castillo in 1961. Two years later, he moved to Elizabeth Arden’s Couture and Ready-To-Wear studio in New York. De La Renta established his own label in 1965 after leaving Jane Derby.
He developed a reputation as an extravagant designer. After his 1967 “Gypsy” collection, he developed a signature of bold yet controlled palette, and by his cocktail dresses with elaborate trims and embroidery. De la Renta continues to design in New York today, redefining American elegance with his famous womenswear line, Signature, the couture line, Studio, the ready-to-wear line and a range of sophisticated dresses and suits known as Miss.
