Lagerfeld May Never Be Replaced DESIGNER, MAIN, RUMORS 12.16.09Written By Ben
Some of the top iconic fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld may not be replaced at all. It appears that labels are appointing creative teams rather than a head designer to take over, which is a strategy that Maison Martin Margiela just took.
In the past, it was common for houses to appoint head designers, just like Lagerfeld took over Chanel. Labels now fear that if they mention who may replace the head designer, this will automatically associate them with another name. This had previously happened when Tom Ford took over the house of Yves St. Laurent in 1999. Designer Yves St. Laurent had complained much about how Ford didn’t respect his vision.
We will see this trend in the next decades since designer legends like Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren will have to retire, and though that may be the case, they may never be replaced.
